The cold phrases avoidants use ("I need space," "I don't know what I want," "you deserve better") are not honest statements -- they are fear in disguise, masking an inability to say "I'm scared."
Key points¶
- Common avoidant exit phrases all translate to the same underlying message: "This is too close and I don't know how to handle it."
- Avoidants use logical-sounding, detached language because they cannot yet name their fear directly.
- Distance is their armor; silence is their comfort -- not evidence that you were not enough.
- Understanding the subtext lets you stop taking their words personally and see the fear underneath instead.
