Intense short-lived romances hurt because they felt like the answer to a lifelong need, but an experience is not a partnership.
Key points¶
- Example: a woman devastated after a 2-month romance ended when the man left to travel and chose to stay single.
- Heartbreak is "a broken heart, not a broken mind" (attributed to grief expert David Kessler): you cannot logic-compare it to longer relationships, so a short relationship can still devastate.
- Fireworks metaphor: fireworks feel special only because it is night and they end soon; in daylight and never-ending you would get bored. Short intense romances (holiday flings, affairs, brief relationships) stay un-gotten-over because they never stopped being fireworks.
- Do not compare a real relationship to a holiday romance or fling; those are still just fireworks, not partnership.
- A partnership is what you "wake up into": showing up daily, colliding and recovering, sacrificing, making space for differences.
- The grief is for a lost imagined future, not only the person; it felt like the answer to a lifelong need, hence the fear "will I ever feel this again?"
- If they chose to leave, they are not the partner or life you were looking for; you can miss an experience but cannot mourn it as a lifelong partnership it never was.
