Sometimes it's a breadcrumb, sometimes it's panic, they feel the shift

Breadcrumbing and "testing the door" look similar but come from different places: one is ego management, the other is panic.

Key points

  • Breadcrumbing is calculated maintenance -- they do not want you but do not want to lose access, so they give just enough (a late-night "I miss you") to keep you tethered.
  • Testing the door is anxiety -- it happens when they sense you have gone quiet and stopped chasing; they reach out to check whether they have actually lost you.
  • Breadcrumbing = control; testing the door = panic. One keeps you small, the other means they felt the shift.
  • Avoidant panic shows up as more words, double texts, watching your stories twice.
  • Do not open the door for people who are not willing to step all the way inside.
