When you stop chasing an avoidant partner, they feel a loss of control and reach back out -- but, the speaker argues, this is usually an attempt to reset the dynamic, not genuine readiness to commit.
Key points¶
Why avoidants distance
- Avoidants crave connection but read closeness as pressure and commitment as suffocation; they may seem charming and engaged early, then distance as emotional stakes rise (slower replies, vagueness, canceled plans).
- The distancing is a control strategy for self-protection, often traced to childhoods where emotional needs were overwhelming or ignored, leaving a belief that depending on others leads to disappointment.
- As long as you do all the initiating and emotional labor, they get presence and effort without risking vulnerability. "Whoever cares less has the power," and they are determined not to be the one who cares more.
What your silence does
- Walking away strips their control and forces them to confront powerlessness, which avoidants hate.
- They typically respond with low-effort, deliberately vague contact -- a "just checking in" text, a like on your story, a nostalgic message. This is reassurance-seeking and a test of whether they still have access to you, not emotional clarity.
- The cycle is distance, silence, minimal outreach, then retreat again once intimacy reactivates their fear. They come close to soothe discomfort, then back off to soothe fear.
What to do
- Distinguish someone returning out of growth (clear intention, taking responsibility, consistency) from someone returning out of discomfort (breadcrumbs, ambiguity, flirtation without follow-through).
- You cannot fix another person's fear of intimacy with your effort, patience, or by being the exception; healing must come from their own self-awareness and work (therapy, reflection).
- Boundaries are self-respect, not barriers. Inconsistency is avoidance, not mystery or passion. Genuine love brings stability and clarity, not a puzzle to decode.
