Getting an avoidant to take accountability requires lowering their defenses first, not demanding it head-on.
Key points¶
- Start with curiosity, not accusation: "Can you help me understand what was going through your mind?" rather than "Why did you do this?"
- Stick to the present; piling on every past mistake feels overwhelming and shuts them down.
- Be specific -- vague "you always / you never" statements make them feel hopeless; pinpoint the moments you need clarity on.
- Signal you are not there to punish, just to get honesty, not perfection.
- Pause after asking and sit in the silence; avoidants need processing time and silence feels like a gift to them, even if unbearable for you.
