Not all avoidants who come back do so with genuine intentions -- whether they do depends on their subtype and whether they have actually done the inner work.
Key points¶
- Dismissive avoidants typically return because the emotional charge faded and they miss safety or connection, not because they processed anything or plan to do better; therapy and real self-reflection are needed for a sincere return.
- Fearful avoidants (push-pull type) often have real feelings and deep regret but still fear vulnerability; genuine return is possible if they have faced their wounds, but without true healing the cycle repeats.
- Signs that either type has done the work: consistent effort, true accountability, and willingness to stay when things get uncomfortable.
- The key question to ask yourself when they come back: does this feel real, or does this feel like regret?
