A montage of Robert Greene interview clips on inner emptiness, finding your life's task, attitude, and failure - overlapping heavily with the channel's other Greene compilations. (Re-titled compiled footage; his framework, not cited research.)
Key points¶
- Humans have an inner emptiness/restlessness and an over-active mind; the choice is to numb it with mindless consumption (food, bingeing, porn) or to fill it with purpose, goals, and a "North Star."
- "Discover your life's task" (chapter one of Mastery): figure out what makes you unique. Easiest at 22 or younger, harder at 30, very hard at 40-50, so do it early.
- Your uniqueness is real - your DNA, your parents, and your early experiences have never existed before; peel away what parents/peers wanted for you to find your "primal inclinations" (a general direction, not one specific job).
- At 30, the process becomes "where did I go wrong?" - frustration and unhappiness are signals you took a wrong turn; you cannot start over but can make a subtle deviation back toward what excites you, building on skills already learned.
- Attitude is a self-built crystallizing lens; a negative defensive attitude is what you will get back from the world.
- Failure beats success as a teacher (success breeds grandiosity and conservatism; Napoleon as the example).
- After a loss, ask "could it have been worse?" and "what is the lesson?", stay future-oriented, allow yourself to be down briefly, then recover.
- You pay a price for repressing emotions (invokes Jung's shadow): they come out in ways you cannot control.
