A grab-bag of texting tactics for building and keeping momentum from first message to a relationship.
Key points¶
- Sample openers: "I'm craving our conversation" (jolts him into the moment, compliments the dynamic); "Why haven't you asked me to see the new Blade Runner yet?" (playfully demanding and vulnerable).
- Do not play games with reply timing; ride the momentum when it is organic to reply.
- Vary the medium (text, voice memo, picture, call): each has an "energy bar," so switch it up when text goes dry (a pattern break).
- Be versatile across energies (sweet, bossy, sexual tension) rather than one-note.
- Tell your story and reveal who you are, not just what you did (the "ribs" example); showing yourself in three dimensions invites them to do the same or exposes a one-dimensional intent.
- "Gracious impatience": warmly call out a lack of progress ("are you actually going to ask me out, or do I just get to hear about your week forever?").
- Smaller moves: add a human detail; "shorten the time frame" ("have a great meeting," not "have a great week"); build a shared reference (a recurring inside joke or GIF); the "intrigue compliment" ("do you know what I like about you..." then a pause, then a specific compliment); the "accelerator text" ("chicken soup is even better on a date").
- Respond to their reality, not their reasons: in a worked example of a slow texter, "all good, have a great week" (warm but low investment) flips the dynamic, and "it's dangerously close to a one-time deal... what did you have in mind?" puts the work back on him. Invest when they invest.
