Why the Fearful Avoidant Leaves When They Still Love You

A self-described recovering fearful avoidant explains why fearful avoidants (FAs) can break up while still having feelings: a sudden "reality shift" that triggers grieving once the honeymoon phase fades.

Key points

  • FAs often enter relationships with rose-tinted, distorted views, and may withhold concerns until later. Some throw caution to the wind and dive in headfirst.
  • Reasons for this rushing: an anxious part hoping not to be rejected; fear of abandonment pushing for early commitment; and seeking connection in superficial ways (e.g., prioritizing financial security or physical attraction over emotional availability or shared values). Some future-pace early, making plans years ahead before knowing they are compatible.
  • The reality shift: as the honeymoon fades, bumps appear and attachment deepens, they feel more vulnerable and begin seeing the partner "warts and all," noticing flaws that were there all along. For an FA this hits "like a ton of bricks," unlike a secure person who sees clearly from the start.
  • This starts a grieving process (sudden or gradual) that confuses partners. She shares a personal example: after a week apart at a meditation retreat, she suddenly saw her decade-ago relationship as unhealthy, cried regularly, and broke up about six months later once she let herself admit something was missing.
  • During grieving, FAs often focus only on what was missing, minimize the good parts, and may be too overwhelmed to reason clearly; sometimes the relationship was actually good, sometimes the flaws are genuinely valid.
  • How to respond: give them space (pressure pushes them away); stay grounded in your own reality, since their view is one perspective skewed negative; focus on your own needs and whether the pattern is workable long term; and use open, honest communication with "I" statements when possible, without invalidating their feelings.
