why AVOIDANTS are DRAWN to SMART, emotionally AVAILABLE people...¶

The speaker claims unhealed, often younger avoidants are drawn to highly emotionally available partners because that partner supplies the emotional labor and acceptance the avoidant lacks, but the pairing tends to sour and hurt the available partner.
Key points¶
- Pattern is most common in younger, less self-aware avoidants; older or more healed avoidants often pivot to more detached partners (hence the common fearful-avoidant + dismissive-avoidant pairing).
- Mirror of the anxious-avoidant draw: each is attracted to a skill set they lack. The avoidant feels the available partner can "carry" the emotion for them, so they do not have to.
- Being with an intense, emotional partner makes the avoidant feel emotion (even anger/intensity) they otherwise do not; another avoidant feels too flat.
- The available partner does the emotional labor (initiating, communicating, holding space) while the avoidant stays distant but still gets intimacy; this creates an imbalanced dynamic the avoidant can control, which feels safe.
- Most common reason: the avoidant confuses emotional availability with unconditional acceptance, so they do not expect or want to change (e.g. a drinking problem the partner tolerates).
- As the relationship deepens, the available partner's suppressed needs surface and become explosive expectations; the avoidant feels "this isn't who I thought you were" and pulls away. Stating boundaries early (while still being warm) prevents this shock.
- The available partner is "safe" and easy because they give everything up front, often idealizing or pedestalizing the avoidant; the avoidant then commits more readily to someone less immediately giving.
- Early comfort becomes engulfing later: the warmth that felt great now suffocates, so the avoidant flips from idealizing to devaluing the partner.
