Avoidants use common phrases to maintain emotional distance while keeping you close enough to feel safe.

Key points

  • "I'm just really busy" means you've gotten too close and their nervous system reads connection as danger.
  • "I just don't know what I want" means they want you but not if it requires vulnerability or accountability.
  • "You deserve better" is a pre-exit warning dressed as humility -- they sense they're about to shut down.
  • "Let's just see where this goes" uses vagueness as armor; no label, no pressure, no confronting intimacy fears.
  • "I need space" signals nervous system flooding; the risk is that avoidants treat space as silence, which becomes distance.
  • "I'm not ready for a relationship" reflects unreadiness for vulnerability, not incapacity for love -- though some are ready, just not for someone who deepens their wounds.
