The speaker (a therapist and psychology doctoral student) lists triggers that make an avoidant partner crave and long for you; applies to dismissive and fearful avoidant, male and female.
Key points¶
- Emptiness in their space: Apart from you (trip or breakup), an avoidant first feels free and recharged, but their old limiting belief ("I never need anybody") collides with the updated version of themselves that includes you. The freedom turns to emptiness, producing longing more intense than a non-avoidant's simple "miss."
- Warm, kind, approachable communication: Shows them connection need not be bitter or conflictual; makes being with someone feel better than being alone.
- Contrast with shallower others: Conversations with business contacts, family, or a new partner lack the depth they had with you, so they recognize how much value and stress relief you added.
- Reminders in their space: A left-behind pillow, shoes, or jacket makes them notice the absence of your warm presence; avoidants often suppress this, which only deepens the craving.
- Accepting their timeline: Signals you accept them; you hold acceptance and respect (a core desire) they lack elsewhere, so losing you feels like losing acceptance.
- Logical communication that still carries emotion: Lets them engage emotionally within their comfort zone without feeling unable to keep up, giving a safe emotional space they did not have in childhood.
- Choosing harmony over disagreement: Calm and easygoing interaction shows there is no reason to push you away, so they want to integrate you into their life.
- Acknowledging any change they made: Praising small things (showing up on time, holding your hand) feeds the acceptance they crave.
