The speaker (a therapist) claims an avoidant can genuinely like, love, or care about you yet still not pursue you, and lists the reasons they hold back along with suggested responses.
Key points¶
- "Interested" here spans the friend zone, an unspoken romantic interest, or a long-term partner who has gone less romantic.
- Believes being alone is easier: treats solitude as simpler than navigating relationship hardship, rejection, or conflict; framed as a "limiting belief." Suggested response: signal you prefer low-conflict relationships and open a gentle dialogue.
- Setting feels inappropriate: more common with dismissive avoidants, who see barriers (colleagues, business partners, workplace dating policies, career risk) as permanent rather than surmountable; anxious types instead believe barriers can be overcome.
- Fear of vulnerability: claims avoidants were reprimanded for emotional expression in childhood, so they avoid situations requiring it; if they doubt they have the skills to express feelings, they avoid a relationship they expect to fail.
- Expecting failure or rejection: more common with fearful avoidance; "what's the point, I'll be rejected / mocked / never trusted."
- Suspecting you flirt with everyone: said to be more common with female dismissive avoidants reading a forthcoming, expressive (often male anxious-preoccupied) partner as not genuine; counter by affirming the connection feels specific to them.
- Fear of ruining a friendship: avoidants open up to few people, so losing the existing bond if romance fails feels too costly.
- You picked fights or tried to change them in the talking stage: they may like you but fear who you'll be as a partner; back off conflict and approach disagreements differently.
- Closing claim: not pursuing you does not mean they do not like you.
