Feeling Is the Secret (1944) by Neville Goddard

Neville Goddard's short 1944 treatise arguing that feeling, not thought, is the one creative power: whatever you feel to be true is impressed on the subconscious, which must then objectify it in your outer world.

Key points

The law of consciousness (Ch. 1)

  • Consciousness is the one and only reality - the cause and the substance of the entire world. Your world in every detail is your consciousness objectified: "as within, so without."
  • Consciousness divides into two: the conscious (male, personal, selective, the realm of effect) and the subconscious (female, impersonal, non-selective, the realm of cause). The conscious generates and impresses ideas; the subconscious receives them and gives them form.
  • The subconscious does not originate or judge ideas. It accepts as true whatever the conscious mind feels to be true, and out-pictures it to the last detail - good, bad, or indifferent - never altering it.
  • Feeling is the one and only medium through which an idea reaches the subconscious. No idea is impressed until it is felt; once felt, it must be expressed.
  • "I am" is stronger than "I will be": to feel "I will be" is to confess "I am not." The wish must be felt as a state that already is, not a state that is not. What you feel yourself to be always dominates what you would like to be.
  • Control of feeling means disciplining yourself to entertain only feeling that contributes to happiness - not suppression. Never dwell on wrong, difficulty, delay, imperfection, or regret; to think feelingly of them impresses them as your request. Suppressed emotion and dwelling on wrong are named the cause of "dis-ease" in body and environment.
  • A change of feeling is a change of destiny. To realize a desire, "assume the feeling that would be yours had you already realized your wish" - deny the evidence of the senses and appropriate the feeling of the wish fulfilled.
  • The subconscious responds to persuasion, not command - it "resembles the beloved wife more than the servant." You never suggest a state to another; you convince yourself that he already is what you desire him to be.

Sleep (Ch. 2)

  • Sleep is the natural door into the subconscious - approach it "as though keeping an appointment with a lover." Whatever is in consciousness as you fall asleep is the measure of your waking life.
  • Once asleep, there is no freedom of choice: slumber is dominated by your last waking concept of self. So assume the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction before you retire; never sleep in the consciousness of failure or discouragement.
  • Method: lie flat on your back, head level with the body, feel as you would were you already in possession of your wish, and quietly relax into unconsciousness. As you sleep, you are "rehearsed and instructed" in the part you will play tomorrow.
  • Free will is only freedom of choice of mood/reaction; the day's actions and events are effects predetermined by the concept of self you fell asleep in. "What you take in as a feeling you bring out as a condition."
  • Imagine states beyond the past - whatever the mind can imagine, it can realize. All visible states were first invisible subjective states called into being by assuming the feeling of their reality.

Prayer (Ch. 3)

  • Prayer is a state akin to sleep that quiets the outer world and makes the mind receptive to inner suggestion. It is "not so much what you ask for, as how you prepare for its reception."
  • The only condition: believe your prayer is already realized - "believe that you have received them and ye shall have them." The moment you accept the wish as an accomplished fact, the subconscious finds the means.
  • Prayer is yielding to the wish, not forcing it. Effort is fatal; when feeling conflicts with wish, feeling always wins. Shut out the senses first.
  • Technique for the passive/reverie state: relax in a chair or lie flat, close the eyes, imagine you are sleepy ("I am sleepy, so sleepy, so very sleepy") until a far-away lassitude envelops you; then imagine the wish already fulfilled in picture form - not how it was achieved, just the end. You emerge as though shown the happy end of a play.

Spirit / Faith is feeling (Ch. 4)

  • "Faith is feeling." According to your faith (feeling) be it unto you. You never attract what you want, only what you are.
  • Get into the spirit of the desired state by assuming the feeling that would be yours were you already the one you want to be; capturing that feeling relieves all effort, "for it is already so."
  • Neville's I AM theology: rather than believe in God or Jesus, believe you ARE - "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." Jesus did the works of God because he believed himself to be God; live in the feeling of being the one you want to be, and you shall be it.

Note: the book presents these metaphysical claims as fact and explicitly omits all arguments and testimonials, challenging the reader to test the law by personal practice rather than proof.

Reception

  • Overwhelmingly reverent and devoted. Listeners treat this reading as a returned-to text, many reporting they play it daily or nightly and re-listen for months, saying they catch new meaning each pass ("the more you listen the more you learn to understand the power you have within").
  • Frequent personal testimonials of manifested results - a dream NYC apartment and career, going from homeless to a best-selling author and coach, money, relationships, travel, and "a profound sense of inner calm." Commenters credit the book (mixed with other Neville teachings) as life-changing.
  • The most-liked substantive comments are people restating the core method as their takeaway: "never entertain an undesirable feeling," always feel the wish fulfilled and feel accomplished/satisfied before sleep, and "you never attract what you want, but what you are conscious of being."
  • Several single out the book's instruction NOT to bypass negative emotion but to control it, praising it over "high-vibe only" advice: "you may consciously ignore it but your subconscious won't."
  • Many thank the channel for the read-aloud-with-visible-pages format, saying it helped them concentrate and follow along, and note the deliberate roughly-monthly upload cadence as encouragement to master one book before moving on.
  • Recurring chain-letter style "someone in every family breaks the financial struggle, I hope it's you" comments, plus the usual scattering of crypto/"Illuminati" bait; these are audience filler rather than response to the book.
