THESE 4 Things Make Any Avoidant Open Up!

Four things the speaker says make an avoidant lower their walls, drawn from 10-plus years working with avoidants -- even though, being stoic, they rarely show how much these things land.

Key points

  • Acceptance (nonjudgment). Because avoidants carry a deep shame wound, nitpicking and micromanaging make them shut down, while feeling accepted goes a long way. Normalize small mistakes. Acceptance still allows needs and standards -- it is how they are delivered. Example: if they forget to call back, say "we all forget, and I value consistency; I'd appreciate more mindfulness about calling back."
  • Positive reinforcement. When they make an effort (e.g. chores), naming and appreciating it goes a long way: avoidants often got little positive reinforcement growing up, and many secretly fear they are incapable of relationships, so acknowledgment boosts their belief that they can do this.
  • Support. Avoidants respond well to support, often felt through acts of service (bringing coffee, cooking, checking in), which builds safety and trust even when they do not visibly react.
  • Empathy. Often the most surprising one. Attuning to and validating their feelings ("it makes sense you felt frustrated after what your boss said") makes them feel safe enough to drop their guard.
  • Caveat: give these four things and the needle usually moves, but if it does not within a couple of weeks and your own communicated needs go unmet, consider whether the person is ready or compatible. It should be a two-way street, not one-sided caretaking.
