Therapist explains: do THIS, an AVOIDANT will NEVER PULL AWAY AGAIN

The speaker's claim: the unhealthy form of avoidant pulling away (shutting down without communicating) can be largely prevented when both partners use reassurance, openness to timelines, and avoid fighting for control. Examples are fictional and the speaker stresses she is not telling anyone to stay with someone who mistreats them or refuses to change.

Key points

  • The problematic pull-away is shutting down without communicating what is going on; avoidants also pull away over emotions, criticism, or a hard day, but those need correcting to last.
  • Reassurance. When a partner has an emotional reaction (e.g. crying), avoidants may pull away or even propose breaking up because seeing the partner hurt makes them feel like a failure. The partner reassures: "I'm okay with accommodating you," crying does not mean they want to leave or stop caring, and the avoidant's threat to break up "takes away my choice" to stay.
  • The "busy week" trigger. Avoidants get embarrassed about needing time to regulate; questions like "noticed you're not answering messages" feel like an attempt to control their time, prompting "this is just how I am, leave if you don't like it." Reframe as a check-in plus reassurance ("you give me plenty of attention, I'm not mad, just checking on you") and they relax.
  • The avoidant's own work: recognize they struggle to trust, that a partner's question is not manipulation, and become more vulnerable and forthcoming rather than reacting.
  • Be open to their timelines. Accepting that an avoidant may need longer for milestones like marriage (if the partner genuinely is okay with it) reduces pulling away.
  • Do not fight for control during conflict, from either side: no threats to break up, no ultimatums, no blocking, no weaponized no-contact, no matching energy, no constant demands. Control attempts make the avoidant feel unsafe and shut down.
