The therapist speaker lists in-relationship behavior changes she claims signal an avoidant (especially dismissive, often male) is leaning toward commitment. Absence of these signs is said to mean it is just not time yet, not lack of love.
Key points¶
- Most important sign: they are comfortable taking the back seat on relationship decisions and letting you set the pace. Avoidants normally control speed out of fear of being suffocated or controlled; ceding it signals trust.
- They prioritize your needs, schedule, and preferences, often without being asked, because they know you well.
- They respond relaxed and willing instead of triggered when you ask for serious or commitment-leaning things (e.g. "yes, sounds good" vs the old "let's play it by ear").
- Behaviors that used to trigger them stop triggering them even though you have not changed much. Examples: an anxious partner's jealous "who are you texting" questions get reassurance instead of a "why don't you trust me" blowup; double/triple texting gets a calm "I'm in a meeting, I'll call back" plus a later non-grudge-holding "that frustrated me but I know you didn't mean it."
- They ask your perspective on big decisions (selling a house, finances, timelines) without prompting. Avoidants usually decide independently, so including you signals you are part of their future.
- Unwavering confidence when answering about milestones (more intimacy, marriage) instead of deflection, because they have decided you are the one.
