Key points¶
- The key to everything is choosing early (your early 20s) what you were destined to create - what meshes with your uniqueness. Finding your "life's task" is intuitive and visceral, a feeling, not a thought.
- The childhood "voice": at four or five you were drawn to certain activities pre-verbally; as parents, teachers, and peers crowd in, that voice gets drowned out and you lose contact with who you were meant to become. Knowing it is a radar through hardship.
- One of the most painful feelings is sensing you had potential and lost it. Recover the voice by examining what excites you and what pisses you off / turns you off.
- Do this at 18-19 for a clear 20s; if lost at 30 you must return to those earliest sensations. Following others is losing your source of power.
- Mistakes are fine if you have a sense of direction (they enrich you); but deviating completely (e.g. into law or medicine to please parents) kills the excitement for learning, makes you skittish and defensive, and is hard to come back from.
- Intensity matters: dabbling spread over 30 years yields nothing; the 10,000 hours must be concentrated (Mozart, Einstein as children) because youthful excitement absorbs faster.
- You master yourself through learning something you love - that is how discipline and initiative develop; a career that does not suit you leaves you distracted and on your phone.
- The recurring question "how do I find it?" has no instant answer - be patient, withdraw, be introspective, and journal; people are afraid to be different, but every successful person embraced their uniqueness.
