Avoidants feel the loss late

Avoidants do not grieve in real time; they feel the loss only after they have regulated, and by then you have already started to heal and move on.

Key points

  • When you leave, avoidants disconnect and distract rather than sit with the pain, convincing themselves it did not matter.
  • They feel the shift when your energy changes -- when you stop checking, stop hiding, stop waiting -- and that silence becomes too loud for them.
  • Their fears surface late: "What if I lost someone who actually cared? What if they don't come back?"
  • The timing is ironic: they begin to process the loss exactly when you have healed and moved on, so the question becomes whether you will even want them back by then.
