Six steps for signaling romantic interest to a crush gradually so you don't overwhelm them, building from presence to a confident confession.
Key points¶
- Spend time around them first; they need to know you exist. A 2011 study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found familiarity leads to attraction in live interactions, mediated by perceived responsiveness, increased comfort/satisfaction, and perceived knowledge.
- Throw in flirty hints once they're comfortable: eye contact, smiling, natural compliments, playful teasing, or a flirty text if shy in person.
- Go out of your way to talk to them at parties, lunch, or work, and text questions specific to their personality to set yourself apart from being just a friend. Watch their body language for whether they welcome it.
- Set a personal deadline (a few days to a week or two) to confess, so you don't overthink and talk yourself out of it.
- Tell them how you feel casually first ("I think I have feelings for you") rather than demanding an answer right away.
- Have a purpose when confessing, like asking them on a date or to a concert, to avoid awkward silence and make it easier for them to respond.
- Respect their answer; not sharing your feelings doesn't make you worth less.
