AVOIDANTS ONLY do THIS when they TRULY LOVE

A therapist who works mainly with avoidant clients lists behaviors she says signal an avoidant partner genuinely loves and is committed to you.

Key points

  • Avoidants hold a strong concept of "the one" they will commit to, so they commit slowly but give that person their all once they do. The signs below may not be obvious early on.
  • They ask follow-up questions after you give a closed/short answer (you say your day was "good," they keep probing: how was the meeting, how are you feeling). They normally avoid looking needy, so following up shows they value you over their own fear.
  • They become more descriptive expressing themselves. Even without emotional vulnerability, they give detail (a full account of a hard day) instead of a clipped "it was productive."
  • They become less attached to their own freedom. Example: a partner who used to go dark on a trip now sends updates (landed, at the hotel) because keeping you in the loop matters more than independence.
  • They take accountability and, crucially, change behavior. Speaker claims avoidants distrust words and value action, so genuine accountability shows up in actions more than apologies.
  • "Backseat decision-making" (her coined term): they let you take charge of decisions. Said to be more common in avoidant men, who she claims feel like failures when not in control; they still state their preferences but adjust for you.
  • Your feelings and your opinion of them matter; if you say something they did was harsh or dismissive, they self-correct rather than stay defensive, because they do not want you to think less of them.
  • They ask your perspective before decisions (e.g. which car to buy), signaling trust.
  • Most important: reduced trigger responses. Behaviors that once set them off get little or no reaction, showing growing trust.
